Control Systems Engineer

Due to continued growth, we have an exciting opportunity for a Controls System Engineer within the Engineering department at Cochran. We are looking for a candidate who thrives in a fast paced field, a keen eye for detail and is passionate about delivering continuous improvements to products and services that have stood the test of time over a 125 year heritage.  

What is the role?  Develop and support Control Systems for boiler and combustion equipment | Support and implement engineering solutions for new product and technology upgrades | Working within a cross-functional teamwork with high level of self-initiative | Drive continuous improvement including the use of preventative and reactive problem solving | Maintain back-ups of control system parameters, programs, and software | Create and maintain effective documentation of technical procedures | Structured approach to managing and delivering tasks/projects.

What you will bring?  Experience of Boiler and Combustion Control Systems would be advantageous, although training will be provided | Proficiency in programming e.g. PLCs, Siemens TIA Portal would be advantageous, although training will be provided | Ability to read and define electrical drawings | HNC/HND in electrical Engineering or equivalent | A solid understanding and experience of industry best practice

Working Hours: 37 hours a week, based at our Offices in Newbie near Annan | Salary Banding £35-£45K

Electricians Mate

Key Objectives: Assist in the wiring of industrial steam & hot water boilers, burners, gas trains, other associated components/products and combustion control systems to high quality standards and with tight time constraints 



  • Coded Welder

    Key Objectives:  to produce consistent level of high quality welded joints on various products, while utilising a diverse range of welding processes & techniques. These are subjected to strenuous inspection with U/T, X-Ray & MPI techniques. 

    Main Tasks/Responsibilities: Welding of shell boilers & pressures vessels constructed to BS2790 and EN12953, using MMA, SAW & FCAW welding processes | Welding of boiler casings, support structures and associated parts using MIG process | Welding of economisers and pipework with TIG welding process 


    Desirable Skills and Qualities:  Time served Coded Welder essential | Completion of Recognised Craft Apprenticeship | ONC Qualification in a relevant engineering discipline | Good overall diversity in various welding processes | Ability to work on own initiative | Conversant with fabrication drawings generated from AutoCAD | Reasonable general fitness level required to undertake many of the processes



  • IT Manager

  • We are currently looking for a proactive and experienced IT Manager to lead our small but critical IT team.  The ideal candidate would have a good understanding of how businesses operate, so as to provide a cost-effective service which meets the needs of the organisation.  A strong background in defining and implementing appropriate IT policies and procedures is important, especially with regards to cyber security.  Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential in this role.

    A University degree in the field of computer science is preferred but other qualifications will be considered.  The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years working in IT and at least 2 years of management experience.


    • Business Support Administrator

    • Key Objectives: Provide administration support to the Business Support team.

      Main Tasks and Responsibilities: Administer local HR database (Greentree) | Ensure all absence information is correctly recorded and up to date | Ensure onboarding of employees is administered correctly | Arrange Occupational Health appointments for UK employees | Arrange and administer the recruitment process | Ensure employee records are maintained | Manage incoming and outgoing mail | Provide cover for reception duties | Archiving | Purchase ledger support | Ad hoc duties as required

      Essential Skills, Qualities and Experience:  Good oral and written communication skills | Intermediate Microsoft Office user | Accuracy and attention to detail


Plater/Fabricator

Key Objectives:  Manufacture and assembly of boiler & ancillary products to high quality standards in an efficient manner while working to tight deadlines

Main Tasks/Responsibilities:  Manufacture & Assembly of shell boilers to BS2790 and EN12953 | Manufacture of boiler casings, support structures and associated parts | Insulation & cladding of boilers using light fabrication techniques

Desirable Skills and Qualities: Completion of Recognised Craft Apprenticeship | ONC Qualification in a relevant engineering discipline | Flexible approach to all aspects of fabrication & boiler assembly | Ability to work on own initiative | Must be conversant with fabrication drawings generated from AutoCAD | Reasonable general fitness level required to undertake many of the tasks

  • Welder

    • Field Based Pipe Fitter/Welder

We are always looking for established Pipe Fitter/Welder to join our busy field based Repair Squad.  You will ideally already be established in this type of role or have some of the skills we are looking for and willing to undertake further training to become fully competent in the role.

Main Tasks/Responsibilities: Reporting to the Aftermarket Support Manager, you will be required to carry out boiler/furnace repairs, re-tubing, boiler strips and installations, welding preparation and pipefitting all in accordance with current legislation.  You will deal directly with internal/external customers, making a positive contribution to the business using your own initiative in this customer facing role.  A flexible working pattern is essential to satisfy project and customer requirements.  

The successful applicant will be required to travel throughout the Region/UK and possibly overseas with full support facilities provided to carry out repairs on shell boilers and assist with equipment upgrades/retrofits.

Required Skills and Qualities:  Recognised Welding Qualification (Positional MMA, TIG and MIG) | Tubing and pipefitting experience | General Fabrication and Installation experience | Product knowledge of boiler plant and associated systems | Flexibility and ability to work on own initiative and away from home regularly | Good communication, organisational  and customer care skills | Reasonable general fitness level required to undertake many of the processes and work in confined spaces/at height | Driving licence | Completion of Recognised Craft Apprenticeship (desirable)
