Delegates who want to be able to operate steam boiler and ancillaries safely under the guidance of a competent colleague. 

Delegates who currently do not have sufficient experience to attend BOAS. 

Delegates looking to bridge the gap in knowledge in order to progress to attending BOAS.


What will the Delegate Learn?

The ultimate aim of the course is to enable the steam boiler and steam plant to be operated safely, efficiently and economically.

Everyday operation/routines, testing and maintenance of boilers, burners and combustion, alarms, etc.

Health and Safety issues surrounding the boilerhouse and steam system.

Water treatment, chemicals and testing of boiler water.

Relevant regulations and guidance notes.


Course Objectives

By the end of this course the delegate will be able to:-

  • Identify their boiler type.
  • Understand all the boiler fittings on their boiler and what they are used for.
  • Know the daily and weekly tests recommended in the BG01 and why they are carried out.
  • Understand the different elements of feedwater treatment and storage, the BG04 recommendations and what happens if a site gets it wrong.
  • Appreciate the different types of boiler blowdown, blowdown control, blowdown vessels and the BG03 recommendations.
  • Gain a better understanding of water level control systems and boiler alarm system and how to check alarms.
  • Appreciate how TDS heat recovery systems work and how much energy could be saved.
  • Achieve knowledge in combustion and by-products of combustion.
  • Gain a better knowledge in boiler house efficiency savings.
