Boiler maintenance: steps to take for a successful plant shutdown

Category: General
Published:

Industrial boilers are a vital part of many industrial plants, providing the steam and heat necessary to keep operations running smoothly. It’s therefore imperative to have a structured boiler maintenance schedule in place to ensure your boiler runs safely, efficiently and reliably. This will also reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns, costly emergency repairs as well as shortening the lifespan of your equipment.

Industrial boilers run continuously for extended periods; but will have planned downtime around factory shutdowns for example during Summer or Christmas periods. This presents an ideal opportunity to conduct industrial boiler maintenance and inspection to prevent issues such as scaling, corrosion and combustion instability which can lead to unscheduled downtime, impact production and increase cost. In some instances, plants may have a partial shutdown where some areas will continue to operate whilst other areas are shut down for maintenance.

Why it’s important to incorporate routine boiler maintenance into policies and procedures

To ensure your boiler system is performing safely, efficiently and effectively, it’s important to follow the manufacturers guidance on maintenance and build it into your plan and procedures. This tends to be daily, monthly, quarterly and annual checks to reduce the resource burden and improve preventative issues. Detailed records should be maintained of inspections, maintenance and repairs to monitor the boiler’s history and comply with regulations.

Daily maintenance tasks to ensure your boiler is running smoothly include visual checks such as water levels, steam operating pressure and temperature, furnace pressure, flue gas temperature, fuel consumption, and heating surface tube wall temperatures.

Monthly maintenance helps to identify potential issues before they escalate. Tasks typically include inspection of burner ignition sequence, calibrate combustion controls, clean flame sensor and electrodes and lights and alarms for proper function.

A comprehensive annual inspection is a requirement for the integrity and safety of the boiler system. This should be conducted by a certified engineer who will check and test a breadth of equipment including the heating system, venting system and auxiliary systems, as well as water pH levels, gas valves, control settings and electrical connections.
